Your body exists in the past...

So, what did we actually do this morning during the 3 hour workshop?

We focussed on stability, and used that firm stability to improve and increase extension.

We spent time gradually building up to poses. Using basic poses to 'imprint' onto the body, before doing more 'difficult' poses.

(Pincha Mayurasana)

One of the beautiful things about Iyengar yoga is the sequencing. When you begin a class, you are never really sure of where you are 'going'. But when you find yourself in Pincha Mayurasana and you feel the base is firm and strong and your shoulders are working correctly and you have the freedom in your spine to extend and your legs are working well to aid the extension, then you begin to understand why you have done the previous poses and how they 'educate' the body.

We worked on poses that students have never attempted before. Taking the time to explore them and ask questions. I love the excitement of learning a new pose. It's like meeting someone new. A little shy at first, but keen to get to know them and make friends.

(Salamba Sirsasana or headstand)

Sometimes attempting a new pose for the first time can feel scary, or daunting (like meeting some new people ;-) but, as with most things in life, 'feeling the fear and doing it anyway' is often incredibly rewarding.

I have found that poses I initially disliked (aka: found extremely difficult) have been most beneficial. They are poses I have had to make myself practise, and slowly, over the years I have learned a lot about myself, my body and mind, through practising these challenging beasts! And some, finally, I have learned to cherish. They bring me a stillness, a quiet space inside me, with pin-sharp focus and clarity. No room for my mind to wander or stress.

Yoga means union, to yoke, to join.

This afternoon, I am hopeful that those students who joined me in the class found one or two of those moments of clarity and peace. Moments where you are truly in the now. Where your mind, body and spirit are unified.

(Eka Pada Viparita Dandasana)

"Your body exists in the past and your mind exists in the future. In yoga, they come together in the present."  (BKS Iyengar)

The first of our Easter workshops is tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the first of the Easter workshops and I'm really looking forward to seeing some of you there.

Extended workshops are so valuable, because they give you the time to ask the questions you need to about your own bodies and the way you translate the poses. There are less time constraints on finding the pose and more time spent on exploring and enjoying it and really understanding the benefits.

If you haven't booked, it's not too late - in fact just turn up at 9.55am and you'll be more than welcome!

Don't forget, we lose an hour in bed tonight - as the clock switches forward an hour.

For information about this workshop and other classes, check out the class times and info page...

See you there!

...and relax

Thank goodness, we are back to normal service!

It's the weekend........a chance to recharge and regroup.

I'm excited about the future, about the classes and about seeing you further yourselves in the yogic disciplines of Iyengar...

Iyengar Yoga

What amazes me about both teaching and practising Iyengar yoga is that the most inexperienced person can come along and tentatively dip their toe in the water, and still leave with a warm seductive inkling of what lies in store. Yet simultaneously, a more experienced student, just pricking the skin of understanding, begins to feel the hypnotic pull of the physical and spiritual enlightenment it offers and begins to truly embrace the myriad possibilities ahead.

It's this rhythmic, ever-expanding awakening in Iyengar yoga that makes us realise how little we know of ourselves and what we could achieve; physically and emotionally. It starts as a gratifying trickle of possibilities which over time swell into a tributary of motivation and then bursts into a torrent of passionate understanding and personal enrichment. This ever widening horizon drives us towards a truer, more clarified picture of ourselves and our capabilities. It empowers us, enlightens us and ultimately provides us the means to find the deep warmth of contentment that we all seek.

Important class announcement for Week of 16-22 March

Firstly I just wanted to say how pleased I am that the new Tuesday classes were so well attended. I'm glad you were able to make it and I really enjoyed being able to tailor my teaching to your level of experience. The classes were great fun too - I'm really looking forward to many more and to seeing you develop and deepen your understanding of Iyengar yoga!

However, next week I am unfortunately unable to hold classes due to circumstances out of my control. This means that the Tuesday 17th Bishops Stortford classes and the Thursday 19th Dunmow class are not going ahead.

The normal (new) schedule resumes the following week, in the same venues.

Sincere apologies for the disruption, it should be plain sailing from the following week.

See you then!
